Strontium ranelate (Protelos) is a newly developed antiosteoporotic drug that acts by reducing bone resorption and promoting bone formation, thereby inducing a positive bone balance. In rat and mouse culture models, strontium ranelate enhances preosteoblastic cell replication and bone formation markers.
